Location

At UWS, many breathtaking sights are only a quick ride away. Take the bus, train, or ferry to the heart of this cosmopolitan city, and immerse yourself in the world-famous Sydney Harbour, some amazing shopping, and restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world. Although ISEP students are welcome to study at any UWS campus, it is estimated that the Parramatta and Penrith campuses will be most popular.

Paramatta (pop. 148,000; student pop. 9,293) is the closest of the six campus locations to downtown Sydney (only 24 km away--a short train or Rivercat ferry ride takes you straight into the Harbour). However, besides its proximity to some of Australia's most iconic sites, Paramatta is also a diverse and thriving urban centre in its own right. It is the second largest central business district in Sydney and the sixth largest in Australia. Parramatta is also recognized for its rich historical background and great colonial architecture, as well as its multicultural community, and wide variety of cafes, shopping, sporting and outdoor activities, and nightlife options.

Penrith (pop. 170,000; student pop. 7,985) is a city located on the spectacular Nepean River at the base of the Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. Unsurprisingly, it is a paradise for anyone who likes the outdoors, offering abundant parkands along the river banks, bicycling and hiking trails (a ten-minute train ride takes you into the Blue Mountains), extensive boating activities (from canoeing to white-water rafting!), and gorgeous scenic views. Penrith also offers all the modern conveniences and social activities of any city (shopping, sports facilities, and entertainment options). It takes 1-1 ½ hours to get from Penrith into downtown Sydney by rail or car.

Student Activities

Upon arrival, students participate in a comprehensive orientation program including a customised information session for study abroad and exchange students. The UWS has great university life across all campuses with regular activities and events run through student groups, clubs and societies. A dynamic range of sporting, entertainment and leisure activities are held across all campuses which are mostly free and provide students with a fantastic opportunity to interact with fellow Australian students. Students studying at UWS have access to many of Sydney's attractions including 40 beaches, bush walks and camping in the Blue Mountains, the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Profile

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) is a modern, progressive university with more than 100 study areas, over 2000 staff, and about 36,000 students from Australia and around the world. The UWS has six campuses spread across Greater Western Sydney in Bankstown, Blacktown / Nirimba, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Penrith, and Parramatta. While each campus offers a unique learning environment, they all share the same friendly, communal atmosphere that makes UWS a great place to study and make friends. Exchange and study abroad students at UWS can study at any campus depending on course selection.

ISEP-Exchange programs allow students to participate in reciprocal exchanges with students at ISEP member institutions worldwide, while paying their home university tuition. Students attending US universities that are ISEP-Exchange members are eligible to apply for these programs at other international ISEP-Exchange member universities. Chances of placement vary by location.

ISEP-Direct programs allow students to enroll directly in a host institution abroad, instead of exchanging places with another student. Chances of placement are typically excellent for qualified applicants and some sites offer special academic programs and excursions. Students attending US universities that are either ISEP-Exchange members or ISEP-Direct members can participate in ISEP-Direct programs abroad.
